Cub Scout Advancement

Cub Scout activities are centered around earning  badges that are specific to each school grade level.  This badge represents a rank.  Advancement refers to the progress a Cub Scout makes toward their badge of rank.  All of the activities for each rank are in the Cub Scout handbooks, and our den leaders will work with scouts and their families on activities and requirements.

FAQs

When is a good time to get started?

Like most Cub Scout Packs, we go year-round.  You can become a scout at anytime. Just contact our pack leadership at pack488and489@gmail.com and we will be happy to help you get started!

When do we meet?

Pack Meetings are normally held once per month and all of our scouts (Kindergarten-5th grade) get together in the same place. For the 2024-2025 school year, we plan to meet the first Monday of each month from 6:30-8 p.m. at Hyatt's Middle School cafeteria. If the Monday falls on a holiday, the date may be adjusted. Please see the calendar on the homepage for further details. Pack events/meetings are not only fun, but can also help complete requirements. However, if you have a conflict for some of our events, that is ok!

Each pack meeting will surround a theme that the scouts will explore. The goal of these meetings is to have fun, learn, and recognize them for their recent accomplishments (with awards, pins, loops, badges, etc.)

Den Meetings (when just one age group meets - with the Den Leader) are normally held once a month and are determined by each Den Leader. Each Den Meeting surrounds one of the advancement requirements for the specific den.

What level of adult involvement is needed?

To follow the guidelines put forth by Scouts BSA, and to keep everyone safe, we require the following adult involvement:

Daytime activities (including meetings, pack events, etc,): a trusted adult needs to accompany the scout and stay during the duration of the program/actvivity.

Overnight activities (campouts): a legal guardian must be present at all times with the scout.

How much does it cost to join?

Annual dues are $155, and there is an additional $25 one-time fee for new scouts. Annual dues cover pack activities, meetings, den activities, awards, rockets, etc. They do not include your scout's uniform.

Do I need a uniform?

Uniforms (shirt, belt, hat, neckerchief and slide) are a part of scouting and can be purchased either online or at the Simon Kenton Scout Shop located at 807 Kinnear Rd Suite 120, Columbus, OH 43212. The staff at the Scout Shop are very helpful and can sew on patches while you're there! Our pack number for the uniform is 489.

Note: If you purchase navy (K-4th) or green (5th) bottoms at a different store, they need to have belt loops since awards are in the form of belt loops.

At the start of each school year, we ask that any current families bring hand-me-down items (hats, neckerchiefs, shirts, pants, etc.) to pass down to younger scouts. For the first meeting, new scouts do not need to be in uniform.

Do scouts earn badges?

Cub Scouts earn Adventures that are specific to their grade level.  A number of Adventures must be completed to earn the badge of rank for each grade level. Adventures may be earned in any order.  Completion of adventures is how the aims of character, citizenship, leadership, and personal fitness are developed. Den leaders will help ensure each scout stays on top of their adventures. Learn more about the adventures for each grade.
